Internet games Internet games (also known as online games) are games that are played online via the Internet. They are distinct from video and computer games in that they are normally platform independent, relying solely on client-side technologies (normally called 'plugins'). Normally all that is required to play Internet games are a web browser and the appropriate plugin (normally available for free via the plugin maker's website). A game played in a browser is often called a browser-based game. There are many different plugins used to play online games. Some of these are the Java virtual machine, Shockwave, Flash and others. Some are implemented via a technology called JavaScript. There are specialised tools used to create games employing these technologies. Games that require plugins are usually based on the client-side; that is, much of the processing is done by the player's computer instead of the server hosting the game. However, there are also server-side games which do not require plugins and process the data on the game server instead of the player's computer. These games are typically not as visually appealing as client-side based games, but make up for that in advanced functionality, particularly because it is easier to implement multiplayer capabilities. BattleMaster is an example server-side game. Hybrids of server- and client-side games also exist.

Computer and video games Formally, a computer game is a game composed of a computer-controlled virtual universe that players may interact with in order to achieve a goal (or set of goals). A video game is a computer game where a video display is the primary feedback device. However, in common usage "computer game" refers to games played on a personal computer, while "video game" (or "videogame") refers to games played on a video game console. Both "computer games" and "video games" are frequently used as umbrella terms for interactive game software. To avoid ambiguity, this game software is referred to as "computer and video games". Desktop Game Game may refer to either the virtual universe and all of its governing rules ("Nethack is a game"), or a particular instance of that game ("my game ended in yet another annoying death", "game over"). Typically, a new instance of a game's universe is created by selection of a "new game" option, while previous instances and player states are retrieved with "load game". A game is composed of a computer-controlled virtual universe that players interact with. Player input is taken through various types of controls, and output is usually given through a screen and sound devices. Video game consoles usually utilize an input device called a controller, which contains a number of buttons and one or two analog sticks. Games played upon home computers may utilize an keyboard, mouse, or joystick (usually in some combination). The input is proccessed by the game and output is presended, usually on a television or computer monitor. Gameplay Gameplay includes all player experiences during the interaction with game systems, especially formal games. Proper use is coupled with reference to "what the player does" and how well they enjoy that experience. Flash Games An animated graphics technology and format from Macromedia. Macromedia's Flash MX and Freehand applications, as well as many other third-party authoring programs, generate Flash files, which can be viewed through a Web browser plug-in (the Flash player) or multimedia applications that access the player directly. Flash files can include sound. Flash uses the .FLA file extension for source files and .SWF extension for the Flash "movie" that is created and played. Flash files are widely used on the Web because the SWF format is very space-efficient. Other movie files (AVI, MPG, etc. ) files are massive by comparison and are not designed for interaction. Originally, the SWF extension meant "ShockWave Flash," which has confused people, because Shockwave is another Macromedia format created by its Director software. Shockwave files use the .DCR extension. Today, Macromedia calls the SWF format the "Small Web Format." Flash supports vector graphics images, which scale with the application window as it is resized.
